The African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) represents the realization of the will of African states to establish democracy as a development model by committing to its promotion as well as that of the principles of the rule of law and human rights. Adopted on January 30, 2007 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the ACDEG serves as the instrument supporting the continent's own political framework. Prior to the adoption of the charter, efforts to promote democracy often took the form of "democracy guarantee clauses" in treaties and conventions. The adoption of the Charter has opened up a new perspective.
Since the entry into force of the ACDEG in 2012, there has been a clear growth in the political and institutional framework of the African Union (AU) for strengthening democracy and good governance. However, AU member states still face various obstacles. The domestic translation of this Charter, which is the primary normative instrument of the continental institution, continues to face resistance.
In the face of these resistances, raising awareness among populations becomes an alternative. This approach involves supporting advocacy for the implementation of the ACDEG in member states. In this sense, the Charter Project Africa (CPA) was initiated to support the engagement of African civil society in collaboration with the African Governance Architecture (AGA).
The development of a distance learning program helps to raise awareness about the African Charter for Democracy, Elections and Good Governance among populations in general, and specific targets (citizen activists, youth from grassroots community organizations (GCOs), members of CSOs, bloggers, web activists, media professionals), in particular.
The program provides access to several online courses, as well as various interactive and diverse educational content (videos, quizzes, FAQs, and forums), which allow stakeholders to better understand the ACDEG, as well as the role and functioning of the African Governance Architecture.
